OSA encourages physical activity to promote healthy aging through aerobic exercises as well as strength training. Placemat Strength Training consists of 10 different exercises that are completed by sitting in and standing behind a chair with arms. The exercises, which can be done in groups or individually, are designed to improve upper and lower body strength necessary in transferring and ambulation, thereby increasing safety, decreasing falls, and increasing hip strength. Medical ExpensesCarolina Children's Charity is an independent nonprofit agency serving Lowcountry children, ages zero through 18, with birth defects and diseases. Each application is considered on an individual basis but must involve a documented BIRTH DEFECT OR DISEASE; children who have suffered traumatic injuries and the like CANNOT be considered for assistance. Carolina Children's Charity also does not assist with babies, who are born prematurely, unless the prematurity has caused an ongoing medical condition which meets the agency's stated criteria for assistance. The charity covers the costs of medication, medical care, specialized equipment, medical evaluation, therapy, disease-specific summer camps, testing and more. There are some things they cannot cover, but each application will be considered if the eligibility criteria are met. Grant applications or additional information may be obtained from the Charity office or the grant section of the website.CharlestonCarolina Children's CharityCarolina Children's Charity
Medical ExpensesHILL-BURTON FREE OR LOW-COST HEALTH CARE FUNDS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE AT SPECIFIC HEALTH CARE FACILITIES. These may include hospitals, nursing facilities, rehabilitation facilities, etc. Individuals may call the toll-free hotline to request information. A list of facilities that must give health care to some people who cannot afford to pay, a brochure that describes the services covered and how to apply for them, and a copy of the Federal Poverty Guidelines will be mailed to you. A request for Hill-Burton assistance may be made at any time by individuals who have incurred medical bills that they are unable to pay, or who are currently in need of medical services for which they are unable to pay. After an application is submitted, a determination will be made about whether a person will receive help, and whether his/her bill will be reduced or completely paid, based on his/her income as compared to the Poverty Guidelines. Medication & Drug AssistanceThe Together Rx Access Card can allow approximately 51 million uninsured individuals and families - approximately 90 percent of the total uninsured population - to access a broad range of prescription medicines and products at a savings through an easy-to-use card. The Together Rx Access Card is free (no enrollment costs, monthly dues, or hidden charges) and is accepted at the majority of pharmacies nationwide and in Puerto Rico. Cardholders simply bring the Card to their pharmacist along with their prescription, and the savings are calculated right at the pharmacy counter. Cardholders can save 25% to 40% on more than 300 brand-name prescription products including those used to treat high cholesterol, diabetes, depression, asthma, and many other common conditions. Visit the website listed below for the most current list of brand-name medicines and products. Savings are also available on a range of generic products. The companies participating in the Together Rx Access Program include: Abbott Laboratories; GlaxoSmithKline; Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Janssen Therapeutics, Division of Janssen Products, LP; LifeScan, Inc.; Ortho Dermatologics Division of Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Pfizer Inc; Stiefel, a GlaxoSmithKline company; Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc.; ViiV Healthcare; and Vistakon Pharmaceuticals, LLC. Participating companies independently set the level of savings offered and the products included in the program. Those decisions are subject to change. In addition, the Together Rx Access Program directs individuals to the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA), a clearinghouse for more than 475 public and private assistance programs, including 200 offered by pharmaceutical companies. Those who are eligible for the Together Rx Access Card may qualify for additional savings on prescription medicines, or even free medicines, through other patient assistance programs in the PPA. The PPA also connects people with free health clinics in their community. NOTE: Eligible individuals can continue to enroll in the Together Rx Prescription Savings Program until December 31, 2013. To help cardholders transition to other programs, they can continue to use their Together Rx Access Card at participating pharmacies until February 28, 2014. After this day, savings will no longer be available with the Together Rx Access Card.Together Rx AccessTogether Rx Access

Prevention ProgramsThe South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Association (SCSCIA) holds the Midlands Chapter for the national ThinkFirst injury prevention program presented to middle school students. The program educates young people about their risks for personal injury and the importance of making safe choices. The message is "use your mind to protect your body". VIPs (Voices for Injury Prevention), individuals who have sustained a traumatic injury through a poor choice that they or someone else made, and who live with the consequences daily by dealing with a lifelong disability, are the power of the program. VIPs provide their personal testimony and peer-to-peer interaction with students so that others can learn from their mistakes and prevent a traumatic injury or death. A health educator partners with the VIP to provide information about how most injuries occur and how to prevent them. They also demonstrate models of the brain and spinal cord to discuss what happens to these parts of the body when they are injured. The program is evidence-based and available to Richland/Lexington County middle schools or youth organizations at no cost. Vision ExpensesThe Seniors EyeCare Program is a nationwide outreach program designed to provide medical eye care to the nation's senior citizens. It raises awareness about age-related eye disease, including cataracts; provides free eye care educational materials; and facilitates access to eye care. Referrals are available to citizens or legal residents of the United States who are age 65 or older, have not seen an ophthalmologist in three years or more, and do not belong to an HMO or the Veterans' Administration. Those who are eligible for referral through the program receive a comprehensive, medical eye exam and up to one year of treatment -- at no out-of-pocket cost -- for any disease diagnosed during the initial exam. Persons who have not had an eye exam in the past 12 months and are at increased risk for glaucoma may be eligible for a glaucoma eye exam through the Glaucoma EyeCare Program.
